Thursday, October 6, 2022
"The LORD will watch over your coming and going, both now and forevermore (Psalm 121:8).”
Depart Tucson Airport for Tel Aviv Israel Group Air-Economy Class.
Friday, October 7, 2022 - Arrival Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv
And a voice came to him, “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.” But Peter said, “Not so, Lord! For I have never eaten anything common or unclean.” And a voice spoke to him again the second time, “What God has cleansed you must not call common (Acts 10:13-16).”
Upon arrival to Ben Gurion Airport in the morning and after passport control and baggage claim, we will meet our guide, board our bus and if time permits, we will take a scenic drive through Jaffa, the oldest port in the world. Jonah set sail for Tarshish from Jaffa but was swallowed by a large fish. Jaffa was also the home of Tabitha, who was raised from the dead by Peter. Peter had his vision here while lodging in the home of Simon the Tanner. It is also where King Solomon imported the cedars of Lebanon to build the Temple in Jerusalem. We walk through the Old City of Jaffa through the artist quarter. We then drive through the modern city of Tel Aviv and check into our hotel for dinner and overnight.
Saturday, October 8, 2022 - The Sharon Plain and Galilee
There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, a devout man and one who feared God with all his household, who gave alms generously to the people, and prayed to God always. About the ninth hour of the day, he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God coming in and saying to him, “Cornelius!” And when he observed him, he was afraid, and said, “What is it, lord?” So, he said to him, “Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God. Now send men to Joppa and send for Simon whose surname is Peter (Acts 10:1-6).”
We begin where the baptism of Gentiles began: at Caesarea Maritima (Acts 10). We include the sunken harbor, the hippodrome, the theater, and the Roman aqueduct. Then we drive to Muhraka ("burnt offering") on Mt. Carmel, with a panorama of the Plain of Jezreel, or Esdraelon (1 Kings 18 - the confrontation between Elijah and the prophets of Baal). Continue to Megiddo for the background to Armageddon (Revelation 16). After surveying the Plain of Jezreel, we proceed to Nazareth, visiting part of the ancient village and enjoying a view of Mt. Tabor. We go on to Cana, commemorating Jesus' transformation of water into wine. We end the day at the Arbel Cliff, which affords a view over the Lake of Galilee and the main sites of Jesus' ministry. We check in at Caesar Hotel in Tiberias for dinner and overnight.
Sunday, October 9, 2022 - Around the Sea of Galilee
They got into a boat and started across the sea to Capernaum… (John 6). After landing, when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside, and sat down (Matt. 5:1).
First thing in the morning, we drive north to Kibbutz Nof Ginosar to the Yigal Alon Boat Museum to view the fishing boat from the time of Christ. We will cross the lake in a wooden boat modeled on one from Jesus' time. (Matthew 14:13). We take our bus and drive up to the Mount of Beatitudes (Matthew 5-7) and then drive right back down the hill to the lake and go to Tabgha where Christians have long remembered the first feeding of the multitude (Mark 6) and nearby, the breakfast of John 21. Continue to nearby Capernaum where Franciscan archaeologists believe they have uncovered the house of Peter (Mark 1 & 2). Then drive the northern end of the Sea of Galilee heading east and stop at Bethsaida, which is the fishing village of the Gospels. This village was the hometown of Peter, Andrew, and Philip (John 1:44). Here, as well as Capernaum and Chorazin, Jesus performed most of his miracles, healed a blind man, and cursed all three towns for their failure to repent. In Luke’s account, the feeding of the 5000 occurred in the area of Bethsaida. Continue driving around the eastern shores of the Sea of Galilee heading south to Ein Gev where you can stop to sample the St. Peter's Fish Lunch (optional, not included). After lunch drive further south to Kursi in the "Gergesa" of Matthew’s Gospel where the evangelist locates the miracle of the swine. Likely, that is what early Christians were commemorating. Then drive full circle around the lake and stop at a location where the Jordan River exits south from the Sea of Galilee and heads down the Jordan Valley at Yardenit. Here, we can end the day with the opportunity for us to renew our Baptism vows before we return to our hotel for dinner and overnight.
Monday, October 10, 2022 - The Sources of the Jordan
When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets." "But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God (Matthew 16:13-16).”
Ascend the Golan Heights today, the biblical Bashan and ancestral home of the half-tribe of Manassah and in Jesus’ day, part of the territory of Herod Philip. Stop for an overview of Gamla, also known as “Masada of the North” where you’ll hear a heroic story of the few against the many, as the raptors that are protected here soar overhead in these magnificent natural surroundings. Continue to Katsrin and visit its ancient Talmudic Village to understand aspects of daily life at the time of Jesus as they are reflected in Gospel stories. Drive along Israel’s border with Syria and stop at the Kuneitra overlook. Visit Tel Dan, one of the most important biblical mounds in the country. Here archaeologists discovered an inscription with the words “House of David,” and you can see a gateway from the time of Abraham, as well as the High Place of Jeroboam and the Israelite gate. Continue to Caesarea Philippi, now known as Banias. Open your Bible among the ruins of pagan temples to consider the words Jesus spoke here: “Who do people say the Son of Man is (Matthew 16:13)?” As at Dan, you’ll also enjoy the natural beauty of Banias nestled on the flourishing banks of one the Jordan’s main tributaries. We return to base and end our day at the newly discovered and exciting archaeological site of the fishing Village of Magdala where we can see a first century synagogue typical of the various synagogues that dotted the Galilee region and where Christ would have first preached the gospel.
Tuesday, October 11, 2022 - Lower Galilee and the Jordan Valley
Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the desert, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry. The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread." Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone (Luke 4:1-4).’”
Today we visit three major sites: Beth Shean, Ein Harod and Jericho. We drive down into the Jordan Valley where we stop for a visit at the modern baptismal site at the point where the Jordan flows out of the lake. We then drive to the strategic crossing point between the Jordan Valley and the Jezreel which is in the city of Beth Shean (aka Scythopolis). Here, we will climb the Tel to view the setting of Saul’s death (1 Samuel 28 - 2 Samuel 1). We shall then survey the magnificent Roman and Byzantine ruins: theatre, bathhouses, ancient rest rooms, market areas, colonnaded streets. We drive through the Jezreel Valley west to Ein Harod (Judges 7), which describes Gideon’s actions in thinning out his army. This is where he brought the men to the spring and sorted them based on how they drank from the water. We then drive east into Harod’s Valley with a fantastic view filled with biblical history. From this location on Tel Jezreel looking east, one can yet imagine the crowned Jehu "driving like a madman," on his way to killing the kings of Israel and Judah. Probably somewhere in this valley, Jesus healed the ten lepers 900 years later. We continue east back to the Jordan Valley and then south to Jericho. At Jericho, we visit the Tel of this oldest city and view the traditional mountain of Jesus’ temptation. We then continue driving south heading towards the Dead Sea. We drive along the western shores of the Dead Sea and check in at David's Hotel along the shores of the Dead Sea for dinner and overnight.
Wednesday, October 12, 2022 - Masada, Ein Gedi, Qumran, Jerusalem
"We are going up to Jerusalem (Matthew 20:18).”
After a leisurely breakfast, we board our bus and drive to nearby Masada. Here we take the cable car to the top, visiting Herod's mountain bunker and the last stronghold of the Jewish revolt against Rome (66-73 AD). We then desced back to the base regain our bus and drive north along the western shores of the Dead Sea and stop Ein Gedi. We enter the nature reserve of Ein Gedi, rich in flora and fauna, and walk to a lovely waterfall. Here we can also try to imagine a possible cave that recalls the biblical reference (1 Samuel 24:1-3), "Now when Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, saying, "Behold, David is in the wilderness of En Gedi." Then Saul took three thousand chosen men from all Israel and went to seek David and his men in front of the Rocks of the Wild Goats. He came to the sheepfolds on the way, where there was a cave; and Saul went in to relieve himself. Now David and his men were sitting in the inner recesses of the cave." Continuing north we stop at Qumran and the possible settlement of the first century sect known as the Essenes, the authors of the Dead Sea Scrolls. We connect with the Jerusalem/Jericho highway and drive up to Jerusalem passing by the Good Samaritan Inn on the way. Ascending the Roman road along Wadi Qilt, we stop for a look at St. George’s Monastery. Finally, atop Mt. Scopus, we behold majestic Jerusalem. Drive down into the city and check into the Grand Court Hotel for dinner and overnight.
Thursday, October 13, 2022 - Archeology of Jerusalem and West Jerusalem
Transfer to Dung Gate. Just inside the Gate take the time to examine the ruins near the south side of the Temple complex, which includes steps also referred to as the Teaching Steps where you may be certain that Jesus taught, and He and his disciples walked and where Paul studied at the feet of Gamaliel as his disciple in the early years. We walk up to the Western Wall Judaism holiest site and view the Dome of the Rock the masterpiece of Islamic art. Spend some time walking around the Jewish Quarter. Walk along the Cardo, the ancient Roman road; view the Broad Wall. Exit Jerusalem by Dung Gate and continue walking along the path to the City of David. The tour starts with a 10 minute 3D movie. It gives a visual timeline of the geography of the City of David from the original settlement to present day. Then descend into the ground to Hezekiah’s tunnel built somewhere near 700 B.C. and was needed to bring fresh water from outside the fortified City of David (from the Gihon Spring) to the inside (deposited into the Pool of Siloam) so that the city would have drinking water during any siege (the tunnel’s construction is referred to in Isaiah 22:9). Walk down to the Pool of Siloam. John 9 records the healing of the blind man by putting mud on his eyes and asking him to wash them away. You will then motor to West Jerusalem passing by the Knesset to the Shrine of the Book, which houses the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the Israel Museum, including the outdoor model of Jerusalem as the city may have looked in 66 AD. End your day with a visit to Yad Vashem, Israel’s national memorial to the victims of the Holocaust, extremely moving and meaningful, particularly in the context of understanding the history and the people of the modern State of Israel. Drive back to your hotel for dinner. Evening walking tour through the underground tunnels of the Temple Mount before going back to the hotel for overnight.
Friday, October 14, 2022 - Hebron and Bethlehem
"Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about (Luke 2:15).”
After breakfast, we drive south to Mamre and then to Hebron to visit Il Ibrahimi Mosque (where the biblical patriarchs and matriarchs are buried). This is a shared religious site between the Moslems and Jews. The cave was purchased by Abraham as a burial place for his wife Sarah. In the Bible see also; 23:2, 19; 35:27; 37:14; Joshua 10; Judges 1:20; 16:3; David in Hebron, 2 Samuel 2-5; 15. The Tomb of the Patriarchs is the world's most ancient Jewish site and the second holiest place for the Jewish people, after the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. Here we shall study, from outside, a completely preserved Herodian structure - identical in design with the exterior of the vanished Jerusalem Temple. We then drive back to a hilltop for a view of Bethlehem, noting its relation to the rest of the central mountain range, including Jerusalem, as well as to the desert and the area of ancient Moab. We drive down to visit Solomon’s Pools, Jerusalem’s main source of water for almost 2,000 years. Passing the monastery of Hortus Conclusus (“the sealed garden”) in Artas, we continue to one of the traditional sites of the “Shepherds’ Fields.” Experience the contrast between shepherds and kings by visiting King Herod’s Summer Palace (Herodium). According to the historian Josephus Flavius, Herod wanted to be buried in Herodion, the place which bore his name. On May 8, 2007, it was announced by the Hebrew University that the long search for Herod’s tomb had ended with the exposure of the remains of his grave, sarcophagus and mausoleum on Mount Herodium's northeastern slope. Continue into Bethlehem itself, walking through the restored old town to the Church of the Nativity and view the beautiful mosaic found after its extensive renovations. Visit the manger and Jerome's Grotto where he lived and translated the Vulgate Bible. We return to our hotel in Jerusalem for dinner and overnight.
Saturday, October 15, 2022 - Around the City of Jerusalem
...He saw the city and wept over it... (Luke 19:41).
This day will include an orientation to the beautiful city of Jerusalem, the hub of the three monotheistic religions. The tour starts with an ascent up the Mount of Olives for a panoramic view of the Old City and then progresses to the Old City of Jerusalem. We walk down the Palm Sunday Road passing by the beautiful Russian Church of Maria Magdelana before we get to the Church of Gethsemane to visit the Garden and have time for reflection. We will then drive through the Kidron called the Valley of Jehosafat, where God will judge the nations of the world (Joel 3:12). Another name for the valley is the Vale of the King; it was once intensely cultivated, and the revenues went to the king. Zechariah’s Tomb, named after a First Temple priest, the Tomb of the Sons of Hezir, a Second Temple-era priestly family, and Absalom’s Tomb. The conical-roofed Absalom’s Tomb received its name because the Bible says this rebellious son of David built a monument here so he would be remembered. Absalom was eventually killed by his father’s men; Jerusalemites of old would bring their sons to pelt the tomb with stones and recall the fate of rebellious offspring. We continue driving past the Dung Gate and up Mt. Zion to the church grounds called Peter in Gallicantu, which affords the best view of early Jerusalem from the west. Here, the Assumptionist Fathers propose, was the house where the High Priest Caiaphas interrogated Jesus. Continuing on Mt. Zion and visit the Upper Room and King David’s Tomb on the grounds of Mt. Zion. From there we take the bus to the Garden Tomb for a special visit and the opportunity to have a private communion on its grounds. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight.
Sunday, October 16, 2022 - Christian Jerusalem
"He has risen (Mark 16:6)!”
Transfer to St. Stephen’s Gate and walk through the gate to the Church of St. Anne, a Byzantine basilica that possesses amazing acoustics perfect for Gregorian chant, with sounds moving across the open space and up from the grotto. This makes the church a pilgrimage site for soloists and choirs. Currently St. Anne's belongs to the French government and is administered by the White Fathers, an order of the Catholic Church. Also, in the same compound we will view the two Pools of Bethesda built during the Roman period as a pagan shrine to either the Egyptian god Serapis or the Greek god Asclepius, both gods of healing and it is where Jesus healed the crippled person. We walk along the Via Delarosa the traditional Byzantine Way of the Cross to the church of the Holy Sepulchre. Then we walk through the Arab Souks and bazaars to Christ Church at Jaffa Gate and end the day at the Friends of Zion. We will get together for our farewell dinner before the transfer to Ben Gurion airport for our late departure flight back home.

This morning, we will start our sightseeing of Jordan. Our guide and bus will pick us up from Mafraq and drive via Jabok River and visit Mt. Nebo from which God showed Moses the Promised Land. On a clear day, we can see the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem! A tour of the church on top of Mt. “You live in Sela. You live there in the hiding place in the rock. Your home is high in the mountains (Obadiah 1:3).”
This morning, we take the desert highway and drive down to the Rose city of Petra. Here, we are in the heart of the Seir Mountains that has been mentioned in the Bible in Genesis. These mountains house the Aaron Peak and that is the highest in Petra and the burial place of Aaron’s brother of Moses. A walk or a horse ride through the Siq, the main entrance to Petra - for 1250 years, brings us to the first monument Treasure "this is the one that appears in Indiana Jones' movie". A walk further down through the outer Siq with all of its tombs and burial chambers brings us to one of the largest theaters in Jordan. This theater is carved in the sandstone mountains of Petra at the bottom of the High place of Sacrifice Mountain. Apparently some sacrificial rituals used to take place here. Now, it is time to walk up hill to the Royal Tombs. We will have a great view of the lower part of Petra with all its Roman remains. These tombs are: Urn-Corinthian - Silk and Palace tombs. Get back to the entrance, board our bus and drive back to Amman for our dinner and overnight at Larsa Hotel.

Friday, October 7, 2022 - Baptismal site, Allenby Bridge, Jaffa
In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him’ (Matthew 3:1-3).”
Early this morning we will drive down into the Jordan Valley and head to "Bethany Beyond the Jordan (John 1: 28)”. The recently discovered site, known in Arabic as al-Maghtas, is located at the head of a lush valley just east of the Jordan River. Then we cross over the Allenby Bridge, near Beit Abara, where Joshua, Elijah and Elisha crossed the river. After we finish the border proceedings, we drive back up to Jerusalem continue west heading towards the Mediterranean shores.
"And a voice came to him, “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.” But Peter said, “Not so, Lord! For I have never eaten anything common or unclean.” And a voice spoke to him again the second time, “What God has cleansed you must not call common (Acts 10:13-16).”
