Masada, a rocky natural fortress, is located in the desert of Judea overlooking the Dead Sea. It was once the last stronghold of those Jews involved in a revolt against the Romans. The fortress was originally constructed by Herod the Great in 30 BCE as a palace. The harsh desert has helped preserve much of this site. Masada is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
